Boards and Authorities

The Haralson County Board of Commissioners is assisted by a number of appointed boards, councils, commissions, committees and authorities.

Certain boards and authorities for the county, individually or in association with other local government units, have been created by legislative acts including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Haralson County Board of Elections, created by 2001 Ga. Laws (Act No. 98), p. 3933, as subsequently amended;
  • Haralson County Family Connection Authority, created by 1999 Ga. Laws (Act No. 113), p. 4083, as subsequently amended;
  • Haralson County Hospital Authority, created by 1998 Ga. Laws (Act No. 926), p. 4506, as subsequently amended;
  • Haralson County School Building Authority, created by 2004 Ga. Laws (Act No. 448), p. 3563, as subsequently amended;
  • West Georgia Airport Authority, created by 1968 Ga. Laws (Act No. 895), p. 2769, as subsequently amended;
  • West Georgia Radio Authority, created by 2004 Ga. Laws (Act No. 837), p. 4521, as subsequently amended; and
  • West Georgia Regional Water Authority, created by 1988 Ga. Laws (Act No. 1187), p. 4926, as subsequently amended.

Generally speaking, terms such as board, council, commission, committee and authority are interchangeable in county government. The groups vary in size and responsibility. Some bodies are created for a specific length of time, while others are ongoing in their assistance to the Board of Commissioners.

In addition, commissioners make appointments to a variety of other authorities and boards throughout the county, region and state, who serve in advisory capacities for specific projects, services or facilities. These operate outside the direct supervision of the county government.
