Marshal's Office

The County Marshal is employed by the County Commissioners. The Marshal is responsible for enforcing local codes and ordinances, issuing citations for code violations, patrol duty as needed, misdemeanor investigations, and other duties as assigned. The county Marshal must be a POST certified Law Enforcement Officer and Certified by the Georgia Chiefs Association.  The county marshal's office has full powers of arrest in the enforcement of all county ordinances and the laws of the state.

The Marshal has the authority to ticket those residents, businesses or visitors to the County that do not comply with codes and ordinances. The following problems fall under the Marshal’s jurisdiction: junk vehicles, litter and garbage, excessive noise, high grass, illegal dumping, illegal home occupations, traffic sight hazards, zoning violations, sign complaints and commercial vehicles in residential areas.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the office of county marshal are to:

  • Enforce all ordinances enacted by the board of commissioners of the county.
  • Issue warnings and citations for court appearances for the violation of county ordinances.
  • Investigate and collect evidence of these ordinance violations.
  • Respond to complaints of alleged ordinance violations.
  • Appear and testify in court.
  • Do any follow-up work that may be necessary.
  • Work in conjunction with the building official/zoning administrator.
  • Coordinate enforcement efforts with the building and zoning department, the county public works department and any other county department or division as may be necessary.
