Higgins General Hospital

Higgins General Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital in Bremen, serving the residents of Haralson, Polk and Carroll counties and beyond since opening its doors in Bremen in 1955. Higgins General became affiliated with Tanner Health System in 1998.

Tanner has invested substantially in the facility, turning it into a modern, award-winning destination for care. Tanner opened a new state-of-the-art surgical care center in 2018, offering outpatient surgical care utilizing the latest minimally invasive techniques.

In the event of an emergency, the hospital's 24-hour emergency department — staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians — is ready to handle a wide range of emergencies, including strokes. Higgins General Hospital is certified as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital — the only facility of its kind in Georgia to hold that designation.

One of the more unique services offered at Higgins is the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program, designed for patients who need additional care to help them recover before being discharged home or to a lower level of care such as an assisted living facility.

Tanner Health System

Tanner Health System is a five-hospital nonprofit health system providing convenient, personalized health care to communities across west Georgia and east Alabama.. Tanner physicians and staff provide the latest technology and treatment options to advance the health of our patients.  In addition to regional hospitals and care centers, Tanner operates Tanner Medical Group, one of metro Atlanta’s largest multi-specialty physician groups.

Tanner Memorial Hospital was established in Carrollton in 1949 by a visionary group of physicians and community leaders. The hospital was named for the family of Carrollton grocer C.M. Tanner, who gave $75,000 toward the hospital’s construction. With the blessing of the Tanner family, Tanner Memorial Hospital officially changed its name to Tanner Medical Center in 1985. Tanner also grew into a two-hospital system when  Villa Rica City Hospital joined the organization, becoming Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica.

With two hospitals and a growing line of services, Tanner Medical Center adopted a name more reflective of its role in the community in 1977, Tanner Health System, and Higgins General Hospital in Bremen affiliated with Tanner, expanding the range of services the hospital could provide and housing many of its new specialties.

Willowbrooke at Tanner opened in Villa Rica in 2009, becoming the first new, inpatient behavioral health facility built in Georgia in at least 20 years. Tanner Medical Center/East Alabama opened in Wedowee, Ala., in 2017, after 86 percent of Randolph County voters supported the new hospital in a special referendum. The hospital replaced the former Wedowee Hospital.
