Environmental Health Department

The Haralson County Environmental Health Department is a section of the Georgia Department of Public Health. This department provides control and prevention through a combination of surveillance, education, enforcement, and assessment programs designed to identify and abate the environmental conditions that adversely impact human health.

The department is responsible for the following permit programs:

  • Body Art Establishment Permits
  • Food Service Permits
  • Land Use and On-Site Sewage Management Permits
  • Recreational Pool Permits and Tourist Accommodation Permits
  • Well Permits

Environmental Health Departments regulate facilities by permitting and inspecting food service establishments, public swimming pools, tourist accommodations, organized campgrounds, tattoo studios, septic systems and various other programs. This Department also conducts complaint investigations or refers the complaints to the appropriate agencies.

Most residents are familiar with restaurant inspections, one of the best known services of this departmnet. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified five risk factors as being the most common causes for foodborne illness:

  1. Purchasing food from unsafe sources
  2. Failing to cook food adequately
  3. Holding food at incorrect temperatures
  4. Using contaminated equipment
  5. Practicing poor personal hygiene

Environmental Health food service inspectors focus on how well facilities are using prevention measures to reduce the potential for these five risk factors. All restaurants are given a letter grade that correlates with a numerical score. For more information on food service inspections.
